That day, the hospital ship belonging to the Indonesian Navy underwent a pilgrimage voyage with a flower sowing ceremony.

Present on the special voyage were representatives of the victims' families, Sriwijaya Air management, representatives of the National SAR Agency (Basarnas), and the government represented by the Ministry of Transportation. "We came here to strengthen our hearts, so that we can be stronger and more willing to accept this tragedy," said a middle-aged woman, after sprinkling a tray of roses and jasmine strands for her beloved sister.

On the KRI Semarang deck, for the umpteenth time, Sriwijaya Air President Director Jefferson Irwin conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. He can feel the sadness that is there. "Of course we also feel sad and lost. We lost our brothers and sisters from the Sriwijaya Air Group, and as a person I was devastated by this situation, ”said Jefferson.

On that occasion, he then promised to immediately give the rights (compensation) to the victims. The flower sowing event itself marked the end of the Basarnas search and rescue operation after carrying out its mission for 13 days. Initially, the SAR mission was planned to end on January 15, but was then extended to two times three days and declared completed on January 21.

The accident on the Boeing 737-500 Sriwijaya Air flight SJ-182 occurred in the late afternoon on January 9. The plane was on a flight to Pontianak City. Captain Afwan who was accompanied by Kopilot Fadly Satriarto flew with 50 passengers and six other Sriwijaya crews, who were to carry out flight duties from Pontianak. Of the 50 passengers, there are 7 children and three babies.

The Boeing 737-500 aircraft rolled off the runway at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and at 14:36 it took off. By 14.27 the plane was already at an altitude of 1,700 feet and by airport tower officials, SJ-182 was allowed to ascend 29,000 feet. But at 14:40, the plane broke contact and disappeared from the screen.

Flight radar footage later showed that the plane had climbed to an altitude of 10,900 feet (about 3,270 meters), but then lost its altitude, plummeted to an altitude of 8,950 feet, 5,400 feet, 250 feet, and was out of sight on the screen.

Basarnas, which received the report from the airport, immediately took action. Some time later, Basarnas announced to the public that the Sriwijaya Air plane had lost contact. It didn't take long to find indications that the plane crashed in the waters between Laki and Lancang Island.

In the afternoon, the SAR aircraft flying over the waters saw a pool of oil. SAR officers who took to the field also received reports from residents of the two islands that they heard a loud bang. At night, the SAR team found a number of pieces believed to have come from the Sriwijaya SJ-182 plane.

 Victim Identified

The next day, the SAR operation was carried out. In the rioting operation, Basarnas was assisted by officers from the Ministry of Transportation, Polri, TNI-AL, researchers from the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), and the surrounding fishing community.

The TNI-AL deployed a number of its units, ranging from the Dive Service, Marines, Frog Troops, personnel transport ships, hospital ships, and the KRI Rigel 933 Hydrooseanographic ship, which has the latest sonar equipment to observe the area around the location of the incident center. BPPT sent a survey vessel Baruna Jaya. Hundreds of personnel were deployed.

In a short time, the wreckage of the plane could be lifted and brought to the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JITC) Pier II command post at Tanjung Priok Port. On the third day, the black box was found. But the condition is split. The flight data recorder (FDR) section can be removed, but the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) section remains to be searched. "FDR data is intact, all flight parameters can be read in full," said the Chairman of the NTSC Soerjanto Tjahjono.

Fragments and pieces of the fuselage, engine parts, cabin tools, passenger items and the victim's body were found. There were no survivors, after the Boeing 737-500 plane hit the sea surface hard, then hit the shallow sea floor. The waters there are only 18-20 meters deep. The fuselage and contents were destroyed.

From the chunks of the aircraft engine that were found, it was shown that the compressor propeller was almost flattened. "The engine was running when the plane hit sea water," added Soerjanto Tjahjono. However, the NTSC is still far from being able to conclude the cause of the accident.

All passengers and crew are confirmed dead. Most of the victims have been found, although not one is intact. Until the operation was stopped, the SAR Team found no less than 325 body bags and handed them over to the Sukanto Kramatjati Police Hospital, East Jakarta, for identification. There are 49 bodies identified, and 35 of them have been handed over to the family for burial.
